 SINGING LESSONS

Choir Class

I offer singing lessons to students on all levels. From aspiring opera or classical singers to serious hobbyists and choral singers; anyone with an interest in developing their singing voice, regardless of the genre they sing in.  I believe a good basic technique is adaptable to any musical genre and gives you a basis from which to grow.

LESSON STRUCTURE

Lessons last for 1 hour and are taught on a one to one basis. My approach is based on a classical technique, incorporating both physical and vocal exercises designed to :

  • develop consistent airflow

  • isolate the muscles required to sing and develop stamina

  • extend and move freely throughout your vocal range

  • breathe more deeply and use your breath effectively when singing

  • improve intonation/pitch

  • add more tone and colour to your voice

  • have command over your voice

  • develop your musical style and identity

  • learn to protect and strengthen your voice

Each lesson is shaped with the individual student’s needs and goals in mind.

In general, we start by focusing on preparatory physical and breathing exercises, and then explore these exercises to a piece of music, to help your voice to develop progressively and navigate any technical problem you may be having with a particular piece.

We examine how to approach learning a piece of music, from the initial stages through to performance standard, breaking it down into component parts.  You will learn to create a daily practice routine that will help ground you and give you a structure to lean on as you progress. By the time it comes to a performance you will have confidence in your abilities and will be able to go out there and really enjoy yourself!

Whatever your personal aims and aspirations, whether you want to focus on technique, or just have fun, vocal training is rewarding and can help you to move beyond current limitations and achieve a new freedom in your singing.

FOR ACTORS

Not all actors are naturally confident about singing in public and yet it is very likely that you will be called upon to sing at some point in your career! Even if you do not consider yourself to be a “singer” as such, you can always do something with what you’ve got.

A classical technical approach in singing has many parallels with vocal production in acting, so if you have had voice training at drama school you will already be familiar with elements of this singing technique.  And, just like going to the gym helps to develop toned and flexible muscles, singing lessons would help build on any pre-existing vocal training.  By using a set of technical and breathing exercises to increase volume, depth of tone and stamina, you can find a way to overcome any feelings of vulnerability and find the joy of singing.

I offer sessions to suit your schedule, whether you need ongoing lessons or a once off session for audition preparation.
